spanish Given the unspeakable tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, and the time urgency of this important issue, we asked our DEC Legislative Committee to write a Resolution to immediately send to President Obama and our congressional and state delegations, so that we go on record now in support of President Obama's call for action.
Below is the Resolution from the Legislative Committee, approved by the officers on behalf of the DEC, which has been sent to the President and our congressional and state delegations. Thank you to the Committee for their quick work on our behalf.

Dear President Obama,
The tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, in which an apparently mentally unbalanced young man obtained an assault weapon with multiple clips and slaughtered twenty elementary school children as well as their teachers and his mother, has brought the issue of gun control to the front of the American consciousness. Since 2007, we have had eleven deadly mass shootings in the United States with corresponding loss of innocent life. We are demanding the end to this senseless carnage.
The Palm Beach County Democratic Party does support the Second Amendment and responsible and reasonable gun ownership. However, in light of the fact that gun violence claims 10,000 American lives every year, and in light of the Newtown, Connecticut, tragedy, we join with Senator Diane Feinstein in demanding a reinstatement of the ban on assault weapons.
It is time to ban semi-automatic assault weapons and the high capacity ammunition clips which allow a deranged individual to create this carnage in minutes. We also recognize that there is a mental health component to this issue and we are requesting enhanced background checks for owners to determine their suitability to own a weapon. It is also time to close the loopholes which allow the sale of firearms at gun shows and other venues with little or no oversight.
We trust that all Americans who value freedom and the lives of their children will readily join with you in this decision.
